There’s no better way to brighten up post-Christmas gloom than with a beautiful wedding to look forward to. It will be the highlight of the month for all of your loved ones so you’re definitely on to a winner already!
January is a brilliant month to get married and here’s why – take a look at our hints and advice on getting married at the very start of the year and how to incorporate all that’s winter wonderful into your nuptials.
Symbolism – Traditionally January is the time of the year for new beginnings, resolutions and fresh starts and that’s exactly what you and your lovely betrothed are doing so why not play on that within your big day. You could include some playful and touching ‘resolutions’ in your wedding vows – ‘I promise to do the dishwasher every night’ are the magic words every bride wants to hear!
Favours - Create a personalised calendar for your guests with photographs of you both and give them as wedding favours, you can add little notes to each month detailing significant dates important to you or your guests. This will be a sweet reminder of your big day to enjoy for the whole year ahead.
Entertainment - Why not ask your guests to submit ‘Date Night Ideas’ for the following 12 months during your reception, it’s simple, low cost and will provide months of entertainment as you select one from the pot every so often, plus it gives your guests some much needed entertainment during quieter moments of your reception. All you need is a jar or moneybox, some paper and pens and you’re all set!
Drinks - Dry January is definitely not a phrase you want to hear uttered at your wedding but why not create a Mocktail Drinks Station for your reception, include lots of fresh fruit and juices and even the kids can get involved. Or opt for a Gin Station which is guaranteed to get your guests in the party spirit without inducing too much calorie-related guilt. Gin popularity is soaring so you can get some really exciting flavours at affordable prices - that will make a gin-drinker out of anyone!
Decor – Winter is truly underway but it’s not all doom and gloom, draw on the prettiest scenery and create a gorgeous winter wonderland no one will want to leave. Focus on warm lighting, candles, fairy lights and tealights. Why not use gorgeous pre-lit twig trees as centrepieces or to run along your aisle, bringing the outdoors in. You could hang your favours or table numbers from them if used as centrepieces or keep bare for a rustic feel. Cool metallic tones will create elegance and light and dark flowers and foliage provide a contrasting deep richness to your colour scheme.
Food – Keep your guests warm as the evening draws in with miniature versions of your favourite home-cooked meals, tiny Yorkshire puddings and roast beef or mini steak and ale pies make for cute and more-ish canapés. Another option is to arrange a hot dessert table; you could offer a selection of fruit pies or crumbles with jugs of self-serve custard, keeping your guest toasty and ready to dance the night away.
Extras – So many unique and personal wedding ideas online and in magazines focus almost solely on the summer months but now more than ever couples are opting to get married throughout the year. This is not only due to much higher costs in the traditional ‘peak season’ but also to commemorate special dates and anniversaries. Or quite simply because a sunny July day just isn’t the be-all-and-end-all for every couple so we think it’s just as important to provide some ideas of perfect extra touches to include in your beautiful winter wedding. Instead of the go-to flip-flops for tired dancing feet why not some cosy slippers for your guests. You could consider a basket of blankets for your loved ones to grab during the evening as they settle down; this is particularly worthwhile for tired children or older guests. Finally, finish of the evening with warm cookies and milk by splitting your canapés and saving this treat as you wind down for the night – a winner with big and little kids!

Including children and babies on your wedding day is the ultimate gamble - They really can be a blessing or a curse.
Kids can elevate the atmosphere at a wedding really well, their antics and cute outfits make for the sweetest memories and of course adorable wedding photographs. Aesthetics aside, it's important to remember that your wedding day is all about love after all so it makes perfect sense to include everyone you love, young or old to celebrate with you - So it's easy to say your wedding wouldn't quite feel right without your little loves being with you.
The big worry, however, is their unpredictability. Adults (you hope...) are able to spend what is a long and busy day in good spirits, even during more tedious parts of the day but kids don't quite grasp the etiquette. For that reason it's very possible that your ceremony could be interrupted by temper tantrums and hysterical crying - Yikes!
This major question mark leaves some couples opting to 'ban' kids completely but if you haven't got it in your heart to leave them with the babysitter then check out our tips and ideas for keeping them entertained throughout your day.
We hope you like our favourite tips for keeping little guests entertained during your special day. If you have any life savers of your own let us know - we love to pass on our favourite ideas to our Brides!
The idea of taking a step back just before you say ‘I Do!’ to your dream dress doesn’t sound like typical advice you would expect to hear from a bridal boutique - but taking a moment to consider a few important details before committing to a gown is one of the best tips we can give you.
It really will ensure that you pick the perfect dress for your big day and help you avoid wedding-induced sleepless nights (dark circles are never a bride’s ideal accessory!)
Before you say yes or even better – before you start shopping, take a look at some of the factors you should consider but are so easily forgotten as you swish around the boutique, veil clad and armed with Prosecco (you can thank us later!)
Venue - The setting of your day is the backdrop of your photographs and very often the glue that holds your general theme together. For a seamless look it’s important to consider the style of your dress within the setting of your venue. A satin ball gown might not be practical in a tepee tent at a ‘wed-fest’ wedding just as a bohemian look might feel underwhelming in a castle.
Time of year – Similarly to your venue, the season will dictate your day in more ways than one. Full sleeves and heavy beading could feel too much in the hot July sun just as strapless dress could make you feel a little too exposed at a winter wedding. Try to remember the time of year you’re getting married when you pick your dress, especially if you’re buying your dress at a completely different point of the year – you might be influenced by the weather outside of the store and forget that your actual wedding day may look very different.
Theme – The world of pinterest and weekly wedding magazines has opened up the ability to personalise your wedding day more than ever before and the idea of ‘creating a theme’ is everywhere. Theme can mean simply your colour scheme or floral arrangements but it doesn’t stop there – Harry Potter wedding anyone? If you’re considering a statement theme for your day, remember that your dress should fit in too.
Your own style – It goes without saying that every bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day but all the excitement and encouragement from friends and family can mean that you’re in danger of being swept away with the buzz surrounding the event and you’re forgetting your own sense of style. The most beautiful brides are the ones that feel the most comfortable on the day so it’s always important to pick the dress that feels like ‘you’. Everyone attending loves you for exactly who you are (and let’s not forget your partner!) Don’t feel like you have to conform to anyone else’s idea of a ‘bride’ because your guests will definitely be expecting to see you, for all the things that make you ‘you’.
Your own opinion – This leads on to the next important consideration – the most significant on the list – it’s your day and your dress. It’s so important to remember that, while the approval of your loved ones will influence your decision, they won’t be wearing it. Comfort is key and that’s a factor only you really have an insight into, don’t worry too much about disappointing anyone because deep down your friends and family want you to be happy.
Accessories – For some brides the most important part of their ensemble isn’t their dress (believe it or not!) and instead reusing a sentimental veil or a fabulous pair of Carrie Bradshaw-esque shoes is the focus. We think your wedding day should be completely personal and we absolutely love helping our brides accessorise their dresses but if you’re working back-to-front and instead are looking for a dress to compliment your existing accessories it’s important to bear in mind the overall look you’re trying to achieve. For example an art deco tiara is better suited to a classic shape and traditional fabrics, if you’re showcasing gorgeous shoes then perhaps a short style will work best.
We really hope these tips help you in your search and remember our new A/W collection is ready to try on today!

First things first - What is a sample wedding dress?
Basically - A sample dress is a wedding gown that isn’t made to order but instead is taken off the rack. Most samples are exactly that, store samples that brides try on during their appointments as they search for ‘The One’ (Sometimes they can be brand new dresses so keep your eyes peeled for those hidden gems!)
Not all Brides consider purchasing a sample gown but there's so many benefits to share with you that we think we can convert every savvy shopper.
Buying off the peg saves you heaps and heaps of time so instead of waiting up to 6 months (maybe even longer!) you can take away your dress on the day. No anxious waiting, no pre-wedding nightmares that you’ll hate your dress when 6 months rolls around – It’s all done and dusted in an afternoon.
This is perfect for brides getting hitched at short notice – After all, if a laid back affair in the next few months is right up your street then go for it! We don't think any Bridechilla’s out there should sacrifice their dream dress, right?
Sample dresses are often 30-70% off standard RRP (sometimes even less) These are amazing discounts on a designer wedding dresses – Think the craftsmanship and details of high end designer but at retail prices.
Perfect for Brides on a budget that don’t want to sacrifice their ‘princess for a day’ dreams or even just savvy Brides that know with a huge 50% saving on their dress they can buy an awesome pair of shoes (and still have money to spare!)
Save time and money but don’t sacrifice the once in a lifetime experience of boutique shopping! There’s nothing quite like your own dedicated consultant fawning over the details of your day or an exclusive shopping event with a glass of bubbly in hand.
Low prices shouldn’t mean low expectations when it comes to customer service in store. Sample Sale exclusive days might have different rules in place (shorter appointments, other Brides shopping) but nonetheless it will be a friendly experience with an expert that will make you feel a million dollars (even if you’re only paying 300!)
Sample Dress Checklist:
The benefits of a sample dress are amazing but it’s important to come prepared when you shop too.
Here’s a list of our best advice:
- Sample appointments are for serious brides, brides that are ready to buy a dress, if you still don't know what you're looking for, haven't been shopping before and want to visit more boutiques then this isn't the appointment for you - you'll feel rushed and the consultant won't be able to properly assess what you're looking for in such a short space of time, come along when you're ready to say yes!
- Ask the boutique in advance what dresses will be in the sale, maybe there’s a page on their website you can look at or perhaps some posts on social media (or failing that just take a peek at their normal collection so you know what to expect and whether it’s your style.) Sale specific appointments won’t be a long so it’s likely you can only try 2/3 dresses on in your time slot so make it dresses that count.
- It’s important to go for a dress that fits well or is nearly there – Generally we suggest a gown can be sized down 2 dress sizes and up by 1 dress size but this does vary according to designer, fabric and silhouette and of course depending on your body shape and proportions. Consider how soon your wedding is, it’s not wise to buy a dress two sizes two big if your wedding is 3 weeks away. With that in mind only try on samples in your dress size or 1 up/ 1 down to avoid disappointment.
- Wear and tear is reflected in the price so check your dress before you commit. Sometimes the discount is due to the gown becoming discontinued or the boutique is introducing different designers and so on but always take a look over the dress before you say yes. Much of the damage will be cosmetic and something a seamstress could rectify – Think loose beading etc. But remember in most boutiques sample dresses are sold as seen and non-refundable so make sure you’re happy with it before you buy.
- Sample dresses are always in a standard UK dress size so it's highly likely you'll need some alterations to make it fit perfectly. Ask the boutique if they can recommend a seamstress and make sure you leave lots of time for alterations, just in case.
- Be prepared to part with your cash because sample dresses will need to be paid in full up front and even though you’ll be making an amazing saving you still could be parting with several hundred or even thousands of pounds so come into store with the attitude that if you find your dress today you can pay for it there and then.
- With that in mind remember that there’s only one style of each dress available so if you love it but aren’t feeling ready to say yes another lucky bride could have snapped it up by the time you're 100% ready. Stores won't hold dresses during a sample sale.
- Sample sales are BUSY! So don't be too upset if you can't being along lots of guests to your appointment. There's limited time and space so all your opinionated bridesmaids tagging along might make choosing your special dress even more difficult.
And last but not least - Have Fun! Finding your wedding dress should be the most exciting part of your wedding plans so enjoy Ladies and remember, we're having our biggest ever Spring sale on Saturday 25th May (every dress is included!) so if you want to make some amazing savings on Sophia Tolli, Kenneth Winston, Ella Rosa, Pronovias and Sweetheart dresses keep your eyes peeled for appointment slots - We can't wait to meet you.

We are very proud stockists of these gorgeous gowns and have recently received our new collection for 2016, one word- stunning! The cut of these dresses is just beautiful and the lace detail is exquisite! Here's a little peek at some of our most recent arrivals- we know you'll love them as much as we do!
Here at Boxmoor Bridal Boutique, we absolutely love a veil! Used by the ancient Greeks to protect brides from evil spirits and worn as a symbol of purity in medieval times, veils are now worn mostly as that beautiful finishing touch. We get SO many brides who have already made up their mind not to wear one, and we always suggest to just give a veil a try, 9 times out of 10 everybody goes misty eyed (especially mums!), the bride "suddenly feels like a bride" and mind are firmly changed! There are so many different styles and lengths available to perfectly compliment your dress, you get a whole new look for your reception if you decide to take it off, and when else do you get the opportunity to wear one? Our most popular length is fingertip, but we have a real soft spot for a Cathedral length veil- just stunning!
