There’s no better way to brighten up post-Christmas gloom than with a beautiful wedding to look forward to. It will be the highlight of the month for all of your loved ones so you’re definitely on to a winner already!
January is a brilliant month to get married and here’s why – take a look at our hints and advice on getting married at the very start of the year and how to incorporate all that’s winter wonderful into your nuptials.
Symbolism – Traditionally January is the time of the year for new beginnings, resolutions and fresh starts and that’s exactly what you and your lovely betrothed are doing so why not play on that within your big day. You could include some playful and touching ‘resolutions’ in your wedding vows – ‘I promise to do the dishwasher every night’ are the magic words every bride wants to hear!
Favours - Create a personalised calendar for your guests with photographs of you both and give them as wedding favours, you can add little notes to each month detailing significant dates important to you or your guests. This will be a sweet reminder of your big day to enjoy for the whole year ahead.
Entertainment - Why not ask your guests to submit ‘Date Night Ideas’ for the following 12 months during your reception, it’s simple, low cost and will provide months of entertainment as you select one from the pot every so often, plus it gives your guests some much needed entertainment during quieter moments of your reception. All you need is a jar or moneybox, some paper and pens and you’re all set!
Drinks - Dry January is definitely not a phrase you want to hear uttered at your wedding but why not create a Mocktail Drinks Station for your reception, include lots of fresh fruit and juices and even the kids can get involved. Or opt for a Gin Station which is guaranteed to get your guests in the party spirit without inducing too much calorie-related guilt. Gin popularity is soaring so you can get some really exciting flavours at affordable prices - that will make a gin-drinker out of anyone!
Decor – Winter is truly underway but it’s not all doom and gloom, draw on the prettiest scenery and create a gorgeous winter wonderland no one will want to leave. Focus on warm lighting, candles, fairy lights and tealights. Why not use gorgeous pre-lit twig trees as centrepieces or to run along your aisle, bringing the outdoors in. You could hang your favours or table numbers from them if used as centrepieces or keep bare for a rustic feel. Cool metallic tones will create elegance and light and dark flowers and foliage provide a contrasting deep richness to your colour scheme.
Food – Keep your guests warm as the evening draws in with miniature versions of your favourite home-cooked meals, tiny Yorkshire puddings and roast beef or mini steak and ale pies make for cute and more-ish canapés. Another option is to arrange a hot dessert table; you could offer a selection of fruit pies or crumbles with jugs of self-serve custard, keeping your guest toasty and ready to dance the night away.
Extras – So many unique and personal wedding ideas online and in magazines focus almost solely on the summer months but now more than ever couples are opting to get married throughout the year. This is not only due to much higher costs in the traditional ‘peak season’ but also to commemorate special dates and anniversaries. Or quite simply because a sunny July day just isn’t the be-all-and-end-all for every couple so we think it’s just as important to provide some ideas of perfect extra touches to include in your beautiful winter wedding. Instead of the go-to flip-flops for tired dancing feet why not some cosy slippers for your guests. You could consider a basket of blankets for your loved ones to grab during the evening as they settle down; this is particularly worthwhile for tired children or older guests. Finally, finish of the evening with warm cookies and milk by splitting your canapés and saving this treat as you wind down for the night – a winner with big and little kids!

Including children and babies on your wedding day is the ultimate gamble - They really can be a blessing or a curse.
Kids can elevate the atmosphere at a wedding really well, their antics and cute outfits make for the sweetest memories and of course adorable wedding photographs. Aesthetics aside, it's important to remember that your wedding day is all about love after all so it makes perfect sense to include everyone you love, young or old to celebrate with you - So it's easy to say your wedding wouldn't quite feel right without your little loves being with you.
The big worry, however, is their unpredictability. Adults (you hope...) are able to spend what is a long and busy day in good spirits, even during more tedious parts of the day but kids don't quite grasp the etiquette. For that reason it's very possible that your ceremony could be interrupted by temper tantrums and hysterical crying - Yikes!
This major question mark leaves some couples opting to 'ban' kids completely but if you haven't got it in your heart to leave them with the babysitter then check out our tips and ideas for keeping them entertained throughout your day.
